We the Veterans and Military Families Announce Inaugural “Service to Service” Higher Education Cohort
WASHINGTON, D.C. – We the Veterans and Military Families is proud to announce the Service to Service initiative in partnership with the Volcker Alliance, aiming to guide veterans and military families toward impactful careers in public service. This program collaborates with leading schools of public service to create pathways for veterans and their families to bring their leadership skills to civilian government roles, strengthening trust in public institutions. With veterans already among the nation’s most trusted leaders, this initiative leverages that public confidence to bolster faith in local and state governments across the United States while highlighting how veterans and their families can continue to serve their country beyond the military. Application deadlines to join the inaugural “Service to Service” cohort are approaching quickly.
“Public trust in veterans is universal and unwavering across America. That trust extends to military family members who share a strong commitment and sense of duty to this country,” said Ellen Gustafson, co-founder and executive director of We the Veterans and Military Families. “As Service to Service Fellows, veterans and military families will embark on postgraduate studies that build on their leadership skills, tap into their patriotism, and position them to continue to serve and bring that trust to influential civic roles.”
The initiative features a partnership with an initial group of 12 prominent public service schools that are members of the Deans Summit, a collaborative network of institutions offering degrees in public policy, administration, and related fields. Participating schools will recruit veterans and military family members for these master’s programs, foster their development through fellowship experiences geared toward the veteran and military family community, and assist them in finding state and local government roles after graduation. This effort builds on veterans’ and military families’ commitment to service and extends it into the civilian sphere, where their work can continue to strengthen America.
“Sustained public trust and effective governance hinge on a workforce committed to service and driven by a strong ethical foundation,” said Sara Mogulescu, president of the Volcker Alliance. “Veterans and military families are precisely the community we need to fill these vital roles, especially at a time when state and local governments are struggling to recruit leaders with the skills and dedication to serve our communities.”
Veterans and military-connected students will begin their Service to Service Fellowships in Fall 2025, ensuring a future generation of public service leaders capable of building confidence in and strengthening America’s institutions at every level.
